Based here

The Town the Van Starts From

Aaron grew up in Sumiton, 15 to 20 minutes away, and is now based in Gardendale.

For most of Greater Birmingham that changes nothing. For Gardendale it changes two practical things. A job here does not have to be built around a drive, so it is easier to slot in when the week is already full. And if a repair needs a part that is not on the van, the trip to fetch it is measured from here.

The working day runs as a circuit, grouped by area so the driving comes out of the day and not out of your appointment window. Gardendale is where that circuit begins.

The everyday work

What Gardendale Calls About

01 Laundry

Laundry, and it is not close. Washers and dryers are the everyday work in this town, and a dryer vent check goes with them more often than people expect.

02 Kitchen work

The kitchen work runs second and it is steadier than it looks: dishwashers, electric ranges and ovens, refrigerator leaks and ice makers. This is the town the van starts from, so a Gardendale call is the one most likely to be seen the same day.

What shapes the calls here is the age of the machines rather than the age of the houses. Most of what Aaron finds in Gardendale are wear faults: a drain pump that has been working against a partial blockage, a heating element at the end of its life, a worn roller, a belt. Those are cheap parts on machines that have already proved they last, and they are the reason a service call here so often ends in a repair rather than a conversation about replacing.

Two towns in one

Half the Town Went Up Before 1980

Gardendale incorporated in 1955 and the housing has arrived in waves ever since. The city's own 2023 profile puts the median year built at 1984, with the 1960s and the 2000s the two biggest decades. The 2000s came within a single house of matching the 1960s. Roughly half the houses in town went up before 1980, and the annexations since then have added most of the newer building along Fieldstown Road and Shady Grove Road on the west side.

A split like that shows up as two quite different repairs sharing a town.

The older half

Machines in these houses are usually simpler: a mechanical timer, a thermostat, a heating element, a belt. When one of those fails the part is inexpensive, it is still made, and the repair is nearly always done in the visit.

The catch is age. A twenty-year-old machine that has had two faults in a year is telling you something, and that is a conversation worth having honestly before more money goes into it.

The newer half

Houses off Fieldstown and Shady Grove are into their second set of appliances now, and second-set machines have control boards in them. A board is a real part with a real price, which is what turns a straightforward repair into a decision.

Boards are also what storms take out. After a bad one the calls that follow are boards, and a surge protector on a refrigerator costs very little.

What January does to both

A washer in an unheated garage or against an outside wall can burst a water inlet valve in a hard freeze, and the first sign is water across the floor. Freezes do cause it, and it is not a difficult repair.

The newest houses

The Third Wave, Which Nobody Counts

Those two halves leave something out. About one Gardendale house in ten is newer than either of them: 175 built between 2010 and 2014, and 580 since, out of roughly 7,000.

Those are the houses still on the machines they were bought with. What turns up in them is a first failure rather than a worn-out one, and a first failure is usually a part rather than a decision. Most of the newest building has been on the western side, along Fieldstown Road and south of it toward Shady Grove, on land the city annexed rather than land it already had.

A real job

One Gardendale Job

A Whirlpool dryer here had stopped heating. The drum turned, the timer ran, and a full cycle left the clothes as damp as they went in. The heating element had failed. Replaced, tested, finished in the one visit.

It is deliberately an ordinary example, because most of the work in this town looks like that. A dryer that turns without heating is usually one of three parts and usually a same-visit repair.

It is also the job where the vent gets looked at. A dryer struggling to dry is not always the dryer. If the exhaust run is blocked, the machine is heating perfectly well and the heat has nowhere to go, and checking it adds nothing to the visit while the machine is already pulled out.

FAQ

Questions We Get From Gardendale

How quickly can you get out here?

Booking is usually a day or two out. If you call before noon and it genuinely cannot wait, same day is sometimes possible, but it is never promised.

Are you insured?

Insured, yes, and a certificate is available on request.

Do you work on the brand I have?

Whirlpool, GE, Maytag and Kenmore washers and dryers are everyday work, and so is Samsung and LG laundry. Amana, Roper and Admiral turn up less often but are all Whirlpool underneath, so the parts are the same. In the kitchen it is Frigidaire, GE and Whirlpool, and refrigerator work is mainly Whirlpool, Frigidaire and GE. KitchenAid is dishwashers and ranges. The brands page lists them by name so you can check before you book.

Can you come out to Mount Olive, Fultondale, Morris, Kimberly or Warrior?

Yes, all five. They are the towns nearest the office.

My machine is nearly twenty years old. Is it worth calling you out?

Usually, yes. On an older machine the parts that fail most are the inexpensive ones. What you are buying with the service call is a proper diagnosis, and if the answer is that the machine has had its day, you will be told that plainly.

Do you sell reconditioned machines, or take the old one away?

Neither. Arrange the old one with the retailer when the new one is delivered.
