What Fails, and Why
The dishwasher is the appliance most likely to be replaced when it didn't need to be, because the failures cluster in two pumps that both present as "it isn't working properly."
The filter, which is not a repair and is worth knowing about
Most dishwashers have a filter in the base of the tub that lifts out. If it's packed, performance drops off and the machine can start to smell. Pulling it out and rinsing it is a two-minute job that costs nothing, and it's worth doing before you call anybody, including us.
Where the plumbing stops being ours
We'll replace or reconnect the water line to a dishwasher as long as the plumbing it connects to is sound and the shut-off is accessible under the sink. If the drain is backing up, or the house plumbing supplying the machine is damaged or leaking, that's a plumber's job and we'll tell you so instead of working around it.
Control board: the expensive end
The expensive end, and it gets confirmed before it gets ordered. A dishwasher that won't power up has several cheaper explanations upstream of the board, including the switch under the sink.

Drain lines backing up into the house, or damaged supply plumbing. That's a plumber, and we'll say so.
Repair or Replace a Dishwasher?
Dishwashers are the appliance where this question gets asked most, and the honest answer depends almost entirely on which of the two pumps has failed, and hardly at all on the age of the machine.
A drain pump, a pressure sensor, a door seal or a heating element is a clear repair on almost any machine. A wash motor on a dishwasher with ten or more years on it starts to be a real conversation, and a control board on the same machine usually points at replacing.
Do not replace a dishwasher because it stopped cleaning. That is a wash motor far more often than an old machine.

We don't publish dishwasher repair prices, and this is the appliance where a published range would mislead the most. Cleaning a pressure sensor and replacing a wash motor are the same machine, the same visit and nowhere near the same money.

How the Visit Goes
Why "It Isn't Cleaning" and "It Isn't Draining" Are Not the Same Problem
This is the distinction that decides whether a dishwasher gets repaired or replaced, and almost nobody outside the trade knows it exists.
A dishwasher has two pumps. One pushes water up through the spray arms to clean, and one pushes water out to the drain. They're different parts, in different places, doing opposite jobs. From the kitchen doorway, a failure of either one looks like a dishwasher that isn't working.
The reason it matters is what people conclude. When a dishwasher runs a full cycle and the dishes come out dirty, the natural reading is that the machine is worn out. It rarely is. It's the wash motor, and it's a repair. But because the machine still fills, still runs, still drains and still sounds normal, people talk themselves into believing the whole thing has aged out, and a working dishwasher goes to the curb over one part.
Standing water is the opposite trap. It looks catastrophic, people expect the worst, and it's sometimes a blockage and not a failed part at all. So when you call, the sentence that helps most isn't "my dishwasher is broken." It's whether the water leaves, and whether the dishes are clean when it does. Those two answers separate the two pumps, and they're the difference between arriving with the right part and arriving twice.
The Hard Water Answer Nobody Else in This Metro Will Give You
Search for dishwasher repair around Birmingham and you will be told your water is the problem. It is the most repeated claim in this trade and it is worth knowing what Aaron says about it. Questions We Get Asked
My dishwasher runs but the dishes are still dirty. Is it finished?
Almost certainly not, and the section on that symptom explains why it fools people. It's usually one part.
Do you do KitchenAid?
Dishwashers and ranges, yes.
There's water in the bottom after every cycle. Is that a big job?
Not necessarily. Sometimes it's a blockage and the pump is fine, which is a much shorter afternoon.
It's throwing an error code. Should I still call?
Yes, and read the code out when you do. Dishwashers are the appliance most likely to tell you what they're unhappy about, and it narrows the job before anyone drives anywhere.
My dishwasher smells. Is that a repair?
Usually not. Lift the filter out of the base of the tub and rinse it. If it's packed, that's typically the whole answer, and it costs nothing.
Will you replace the water line?
Yes, where the shut-off under the sink is accessible. The plumbing boundary above says where it stops.
Can you install a new dishwasher?
Yes, if you bought it yourself. Aaron will install a dishwasher you've had delivered, as long as it's in the kitchen when he arrives. We don't haul the old one away.
Is it worth repairing a ten-year-old dishwasher?
It depends entirely on which part. That's the honest answer and not a hedge. The repair-or-replace section sets out where the line usually falls. The number worth knowing is the first-visit fix rate: around eight in ten finish on the first visit when the part is local.
Can you come the same day?
Occasionally, if you catch him before noon and the schedule has room. Most dishwasher faults aren't urgent and people are usually fine with a day or two.
