Tucker Appliance Repair is one person. Aaron Tucker answers the phone, works out what is probably wrong, drives to your house, does the repair and stands behind it. There is no dispatcher, no call center and no second technician.

That is a deliberate choice rather than a stage the business hasn't grown out of yet, and the rest of this explains where it came from.

Three generations

Fifty Years Before This Business Existed

Aaron's father owned Westwood Appliance, selling used and refurbished machines and doing both in-shop and in-home repairs. His grandfather had it before that. The business was in the family for more than fifty years.

Aaron started working there in the summers as soon as he could drive, around 2011. He was not handed a meter. He started at the bottom, cleaning and painting refurbished appliances to get them ready to sell, and worked up from there: helping customers, selling machines, then learning how they actually worked and how to diagnose them.

What his father taught him, in his own words, was hard work and work ethic, how to take care of customers, and that it was always about doing the right thing. That is a plainer statement of values than most companies would write for themselves, and the words are his.

His father is retired now. Aaron used to call him constantly, first when he moved to the service side and again when he started out on his own. He doesn't call much anymore, and the reason is worth saying honestly: on most of today's machines he is now the more experienced of the two, because appliances have changed a great deal since his father was working on them.

Learning the trade

Learning the Other Half of the Job

A shop teaches you machines. It doesn't teach you how to run a service business, so Aaron went to work for an in-home service company in Birmingham to learn that half.

It taught him scheduling, pricing, how to work on appliances he had never seen at his father's store, and how a service operation runs day to day. It also taught him what he wanted to do differently.

His conclusion was to stay small on purpose. He wanted to be the person the customer talks to and the person who shows up at the door, because that is the service he would want himself. He also wanted to work alone, and he says so plainly rather than dressing it up. What he took with him from the bigger company was the standard of communication, not the structure.

Out on his own

2022, Out on His Own

Aaron went out on his own in 2022. There was no dramatic moment. He had hit a wall where he couldn't advance any further, so he took the leap.

The first year was a set of tools, a determination to make it work, and as many jobs as he could take. He knew it was going to work because he was determined that it would and because customers were finding him through local sources that gave him traction.

There is a marked, lettered vehicle now, and a customer review that mentions it specifically. But the business is the same size it was on purpose, and the person who turns up is still the person who answered.

What it means for you

What That Means for You

✆

The person on the phone is the person at the door

You are not describing your washer to somebody who will summarize it for a technician. You are describing it to the technician.

⚙

The diagnosis is done at your machine, not guessed from the symptom

Which matters most on the expensive faults, where guessing at a control board and being wrong is how a repair stops being worth doing.

⚖

You get told when a repair isn't worth doing

Even though that is the outcome that doesn't pay. The repair-or-replace page sets out the reasoning and is honest about the commercial logic behind it.

⚠

If it is not a job he takes, you hear it on the phone

Aaron will tell you on the first call whether your appliance is something he works on, rather than explaining it in your kitchen after you have paid a service call.

Insured, and a Jefferson County business license

Alabama does not license ordinary household appliance repair. The state's heating, air conditioning and refrigeration law specifically exempts household appliances, so there is no appliance repair license in this state to hold. What this business does have is a Jefferson County business license and insurance. If a company tells you it holds an appliance repair license in Alabama, it is worth asking which license they mean.

One-man operation, and you can tell

"It's a one-man operation, and you can tell he takes pride in the service that he provides. In a world where good customer service can be hard to find, it was refreshing to deal with someone who was reliable, friendly, and genuinely committed to doing a great job."
