You are on the right page

Washer, dryer, dishwasher and oven repair in all three Mountain Brook villages, by Aaron Tucker himself, at the same $100 service call as everywhere else. Here the model plate tells us more than the address, and this page explains why.

Two houses on the same road here can be thirty years apart in the kitchen without looking it. About 41% of Mountain Brook was built before 1960, and a few hundred homes have gone up in the last fifteen years, though not on the edge of town, because there is no edge left to build on.

The house, not the town

What That Changes About the Call

It moves the useful question from the town to the house.

Somewhere on the machine there is a model plate: inside the door frame on most washers, under the lid on a top-loader, along the bottom edge or behind the kick panel on a dishwasher. A phone photo of it settles in one minute what an address here cannot settle at all, and it decides whether the right part is already on the van.

The second thing worth saying on the phone is whether the kitchen has been redone, and roughly when. Standard built-in dishwashers are everyday work, and so are wall ovens that can be worked on where they sit. A refit sometimes brings in something different, so say what the kitchen has and Aaron will tell you in a two-minute call whether it is a job he takes.

The everyday work

What Mountain Brook Calls About

01 Laundry

Laundry, as everywhere on this map. Kitchen work runs second.

02 Two kitchens, one street

What makes this town unusual is that two houses on the same street can be a generation apart, and so can their kitchens. One address is a mid-century house with a mainstream washer somebody installed twenty years ago. The next is a recent renovation with machines that were specified rather than bought. The first is straightforward work. The second is where a machine that was specified rather than bought turns up, and that is worth a photo before you book.

Neither is a better customer and the service call is the same hundred dollars at both addresses. But they are different phone conversations, which is why the first question here is what the machine is rather than what it is doing.

Laid out in 1929

Why This Town Is Like That

Mountain Brook was laid out in 1929 by Robert Jemison Jr., on a land plan drawn by the Boston landscape architect Warren H. Manning: estate lots on winding roads, with the stores concentrated into three villages. The city incorporated in 1942.

It filled up fast and then stopped. The population went from 8,359 in 1950 to 19,509 in 1970, and then barely moved: up 1.1% across the whole of the 1970s, and 0.5% across the 1980s. The lots were spoken for.

What the housing figures show

The 1950s and the 1960s are the two biggest decades, together about 43% of every home in town, and the median year built is 1964. About 41% of the housing predates 1960.

A good many of the newer houses here replaced older ones on the same lot, which is why two neighbors can be a generation apart in the kitchen.

The Most Expensive Housing on This Map

The median owner-occupied home in Mountain Brook is worth about $916,300. In Irondale, about fifteen minutes away and inside the same service area, it is about $255,800.

The service call is $100 in both. There is no Mountain Brook rate, and there is no version of this where the quote moves because of the zip code. If a repair is quoted higher here it is because the part costs more, and you will be told which part and why before anybody touches it. The same Whirlpool dishwasher costs the same to repair on either side of the mountain, because it is the same dishwasher and the same pump.

A real job

One Mountain Brook Job

A Whirlpool dishwasher here had stopped washing. The wash motor had failed, and once it was replaced the machine went back to doing its job.

It is on the page precisely because it is unremarkable. A mainstream dishwasher with one failed component is an ordinary repair, and a dishwasher is a dishwasher whatever the house cost.

FAQ

Questions From Mountain Brook

Does what the machine cost change whether you take it?

Price is not what decides it. Machines from the mainstream manufacturers are everyday work whatever they cost, and that includes standard built-in dishwashers and wall ovens that do not have to come out of the cabinetry. If yours was specified with a kitchen refit, send a photo and Aaron will tell you on the phone.

How do I find out which I have before booking?

Send a photo of the machine and a photo of the model plate. It settles it in a minute.

What does the visit cost?

$100 for the service call. It covers the trip and a full diagnosis and comes off the repair if you go ahead.

How soon can somebody come?

Booking is usually a day or two out. If you call before noon and it genuinely cannot wait, same day is sometimes possible, but it is never promised.

Are you insured?

Insured, yes, and a certificate is available on request.

Is there a warranty?

90 days on labor and on any part we supply. The exclusions are short and they are listed in full on the FAQs, which is the one place that carries the whole policy.

Do you cover Crestline, English Village and Mountain Brook Village?

All three villages and everywhere between them. Cahaba Heights is the one people get wrong: it belongs to Vestavia Hills, and it is covered on that page.

Is there a military discount?

10% for military and veterans, if you mention it when you book.

Booking

Booking a Mountain Brook Appointment

Call or text with what the machine is doing, whether the kitchen has been redone, and a photo of the model plate if you can reach it. On this side of Red Mountain those two details do more work than the address.
