"The fridge isn't cold but the freezer is fine."

This is the good one. It means the sealed system is working, because the freezer proves it. The fault is almost always in getting cold air from the freezer into the fresh food side, which means an evaporator fan, a defrost problem or an air damper. All fixable, all work we take.

"Nothing's cold. It's running but neither side is cooling."

When both compartments are warm and the machine is still running, it usually points at the sealed system: a compressor, or a refrigerant leak. Describe it on the phone and Aaron will tell you straight away whether it is a job he can take, before you've paid anybody to come out.

"There's water on the floor."

Very often the water inlet valve or the line feeding it, and both are jobs he takes. Turn the water off behind the fridge and call.

"The ice maker has stopped."

A quarter of all refrigerator calls, and one of the most reliably fixable. It has its own page.

"There's a wall of ice in the back of the freezer."

A defrost fault, and it's a repair. One important thing: don't unplug it. A badly iced freezer that gets unplugged puts a lot of water on your floor, and floor damage costs more than the repair.

"It's making a noise."

Usually the evaporator or condenser fan. Worth describing on the phone, because a fan and a compressor are very different jobs.

Evaporator fan: the fridge-warm, freezer-cold fault

The fan that moves cold air from the freezer into the fresh food compartment. When it fails, the freezer stays fine and the fridge climbs. That combination is the single clearest sign the sealed system is healthy and the fault is one worth fixing.

Defrost system: the ice wall

Defrost heater, thermostat and control. When the defrost cycle stops working, frost builds on the evaporator until air can't pass through it. A defrost heater should read somewhere in the region of 10 to 30 ohms; when it reads open, that's the answer.

Water inlet valve and water lines: the leak

Where most refrigerator leaks start. We'll replace a water line to a fridge as long as the plumbing it connects to is sound and the shut-off is behind the refrigerator where it can be reached. If the shut-off is buried in a cabinet or another room, that's a plumber.

The freezer question, on the phone

Is the freezer still cold? That single answer tells him more about the fault than anything else, before anyone drives anywhere.

Empty the fridge or freezer if he asks

If the job means getting into either compartment and taking panels off, he'll ask you to clear it out beforehand. It makes the visit shorter and it protects your food.

A warm refrigerator jumps the queue where the schedule allows, because food is on the line.

Temperatures first, with an infrared thermometer

The fresh food side should sit around 35 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer around 0 to 5. Those two readings, taken properly, tell him more in thirty seconds than a description does in five minutes.

Then the panels come off

Rear panel at the back for the compressor area, condenser fan, defrost drain and water valve. Rear panel inside the freezer for the evaporator fan and the defrost components. Most refrigerators pull out easily, which helps.

A price, or an honest recommendation

You get one all-in figure. If the diagnosis lands on the sealed system, you get a referral or a recommendation to replace, and a clear explanation of why.

Describing what he sees when the rear panel comes off a refrigerator, he lists a little corrosion on the compressor refrigerant lines and, in his words, maybe even some hard water build up on top of the water inlet valve or where the water line connects to the valve. That is not a theory about this metro's water. It is what is on the parts when he opens the machine.

Why two identical machines do not scale up alike

Which is why the symptom matters more than the zip code

A dispenser that has gone slow, an ice maker producing less than it did, a filter that seems to need changing sooner than the manual says: those all point at the water side of the machine. Say so when you book. A sealed-system fault is a different conversation, and one to have on the phone first.
